Sunkissed - Review

Welcome to the final review of the year.
I know that half the world is about to welcome 2014 but here we have a few more hours to celebrate.
I decided to say goodbye to this year with a review for a book about my favorite topic: VAMPIRES.

BTW, I wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR. I hope 2014 brings lots of love, fun, good moments and millions of BOOKS :)

My thanks to the author who send me a copy of her book.

Sunkissed
by Carys Jones
SunkissedDawn Summers is dying. It’s 1853 and as the seventeen year old continues to fade away she has visions of the father she never knew, urging her to fight for her life.

In the small village of Fandova the only medical care is in the form of the mysterious Dr. Moralus who has a known penchant for bloodletting. Thomas, Dawn's fiancé, is warned against inviting his intervention, but feels he has no choice, he pleads with the doctor to save Dawn’s life…whatever it takes.

Whatever it ‘takes’ has some consequences neither of them expected. Now, it’s a hunt to the death, with both Dawn and Thomas determined to win.

MY REVIEW.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What if the person you love would be dying? How far would you go to save your loved one? These are the types of questions Thomas has to face when his fiancée is suffering and in the verge of death. A mysterious and dark doctor seems the only hope to save her and he runs to his aids against Dawn’s mother warnings. A single choice will change the lives of Thom and Dawn forever.

As you can imagine for the cover and the blurb this book is about the blood-suckers some of us love. Carys presents us with some classic vampires (the ones who can’t go out in the sunlight) which is amazing and refreshing. Not only they share the same characteristics from old vampires they also have the same devilish personalities.

Dawn's story is set in two different times and it’s nice to see how their lives evolve and change from 1863 to modern day. Both moments are well portrayed and the New York scenario was a great choice. With a changing point of view that allows us see from different perspectives and create a more solid world, we get to know the motivations and desires of the two main characters.

As far as the rhythm, the book is a bit slow for moments and the action takes time to arrive, however, you get to the end before you even notice because is not a long book.

This is a story about losing your humanity and the fight between turning yourself into a monster and trying to stay as human as possible.

Overall, the story has great potential to be a series because there are many loose ties at the end and unanswered questions that could lead to a sequel. Dawn is a strong character, she is the reason why the story continues being interesting and entertaining even during its slow moments.

If you love vampires, you should give this book a chance.

AUTHOR BIO:

Zack Love graduated from Harvard College, where he tried to create a bachelor’s degree in Women. With the bachelor portion of that degree in hand, he settled in New York City but – to afford renting his bed-sized studio – found himself flirting mostly with a computer screen and stacks of documents. Determined not to die a corporate drone, Zack decided to sacrifice sleep for screenwriting, an active social life, and Internet startups offering temporary billion-dollar fantasies.

To feed his steady diet of NYC nightlife, he regularly crashed VIP parties in the early 2000s and twice bumped into his burgeoning crush, a Hollywood starlet. But – much to Zack’s surprise – neither of those awkward conversations led to marriage with the A-list actress. Zack eventually consoled himself by imagining fiascoes far worse than those involving his celebrity crush. In the process, he dreamed up a motley gang of five men inspired by some of his college friends and quirky work colleagues. And thus was born Sex in the Title.

But the novel is not autobiographical: Zack never had his third leg attacked by any mammal (nor by any plant, for that matter). In fact, keeping his member safe has been one of Zack’s lifelong goals – and one of the few that he’s managed to accomplish.

EXCERPT:

“So what’s the body count?”
“The body count?”
“You know: how many women have you slept with in your twenty-nine years?”
Evan wasn’t sure whether to overstate the number to look sexually impressive to a soft porn star, or whether to understate the number to look less promiscuous and more like the responsible, clean cut, solid-boyfriend type. Since he still hadn’t quite figured out what Tina was looking for or who she really was, he decided just to tell the truth.
“I’ve been with about sixty-seven women.”
“What do you mean ‘about sixty-seven?’ You say ‘about sixty’ or ‘about seventy.’ But not ‘about sixty-seven.’ You’re obviously keeping track.” Tina looked amused at another opportunity to toy with Evan.
“All right. You got me,” Evan conceded. “I’ve been with precisely sixty-seven women.”
“Unless, of course, you said ‘about’ because the total depends on how you define ‘being with a woman.’ For example, if you just got a blowjob and nothing else then maybe you don’t count that.”
“OK. To be more precise, I’ve had sexual intercourse with sixty-seven women.”
“All right, so then you’ve probably been with many more women than sixty-seven?”
“Yeah. But I don’t keep track of those.” Evan suddenly wondered why he didn’t bother to keep track of anything but consummation.
“I see…So when did you get started on these sixty-seven women?”
“You mean, how old was I when I lost my virginity?”
“Yes.”
“Twenty.”
“So you’ve slept with sixty-seven women in just nine years.”
“Well, actually I’ve had six serious relationships that together took up about two years.”
“Serious? Let’s see…Six serious relationships in two years…So each one lasted an average of four months. You call that serious?”
“Well, it was an intense four months. And I wasn’t seeing anyone else. You know, that’s kind of a big deal in New York,” he added ironically. “Dating someone exclusively for four months in New York is like four years in Anchorage.”
Tina chuckled at Evan’s joke. “All right, so not counting the serious relationships, you’ve slept with...” She crunched some numbers in her head. “You’ve slept with sixty-one women in just seven years…That’s an average of almost nine per year…A new woman every forty days.” Tina seemed impressed, which suddenly made Evan feel rather promiscuous.

******MY REVIEW

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Vivian has been in a verbally abusive relationship and as many women in her situation she is in denial. When she finally decides to get away from an awful boyfriend, her brother’s best friend will be the knight in shiny armor she needed.

A fast and erotic story about two people who have known since childhood and apparently both of them have thought about the other as more than friends. An easy to read book because of the simple language used by the author.

Vivian is not one of my favorite characters. She starts being this shattered woman who has lived through some hard moments in her life and has lost herself in a non-healthy relationship. At first she is well portrayed and is easy to imagine why she acts or thinks certain way but she moves on too fast. I find it hard to believe that a woman who has been years in an abusive relationship can react that fast and leave the man who has hurt her without a second thought. It makes good to the story because it set in motion a series of events that are good to read but her character doesn’t seem real or likeable.

Liam is supposed to be the perfect man, sweet, strong, sexy, a war hero. The author creates a partner who has both great personality and great bed skills. Thanks to him, the story has a high sexual content which is well written without being too trashy or obvious.

The book has a dual POV and I like it. It makes the story more dynamic and interesting to read. Liam has an expressive and deep voice and Vivian is sad and a bit pessimist at first but more jovial and mature at the end.

Overall, this is a good new adult reading with high doses of hot romance. I would like to read the second book just to see how their story unravels.

Excerpt

Unable to meet his gaze, I picked up my fork and pushed the food around the plate in a circle. “He accused me of sleeping with you.” I inhaled sharply. “And he called me frigid again.” I paused and took a swig of wine to cover my distress. “Sometimes I can’t help but wonder …  if I wasn’t so frigid in bed, he wouldn’t have needed to find it elsewhere.”
I heard Liam exhale. “Don’t do that, Viv.”
As I fiddled with the stem of the wineglass, I forced myself to meet his gaze. “Do what?”
“Doubt yourself. Blame yourself. Don’t do that.” His voice was nothing but kind. There was no hint of condescension in it.
I tried to speak, failed, so I drank some more wine.
“Listen.” Liam set his fork on the table. “If a girl is frigid, it is usually because the way she is treated outside of bed has left her frigid.”
“But there has to be something wrong with me. I mean, what twenty-two-year-old has never experienced the Big O? You know, I can be a little uptight, even high-strung at times. So really, it could just be me.”
“It’s not you,” Liam said firmly. “Don’t let Brody mess with your head. Do you know that about ten percent of women have never experienced an orgasm? And most women aren’t able to climax with intercourse alone. They need other sorts of …” He paused, seemingly to search for the word. “Stimulation.”
The word made a blush rise on my neck and throat.
Liam leaned back in his chair and regarded me steadily. “And from what it sounds like, Brody is a fucking moron. No guy should ever expect you to function with the predictability of a machine. And if he does, then he should just have sex with his car.”
I smothered a giggle. “So I take it you’ve had plenty of experience helping girls reach the pinnacle of sexual passion.”
His lips turned upward in a semi-grin. “Not really.”
“C’mon,” I teased, swirling the wine in my glass. “What about all those Jessicas you dated? Jessica Neal, Jessica Cena, Jessica Long, Jessica Alba?”
He let out a dismissive laugh. “I never dated Jessica Alba.”
As I forked a mouthful of ravioli, I pointed out, “You had the biggest crush on her, though.”
He didn’t deny it. “Me and every other guy I knew.”
I arched an eyebrow. “So did you love all the other Jessicas?”
He shrugged. “Truthfully, I don’t think I even knew what love was back then.”
I eyed him curiously. “Do you know now?”
He shoveled in a bite, chewed then swallowed. “I think I may have some idea.”
I leaned back in my chair and ran a fingertip around the rim of my wineglass. “What do you think love should feel like? Fireworks? Crazy intense, mad passion?”
The look he gave me was long and considering. He lifted his glass and took a swig before answering. “I think a slow burning candle produces more warmth and light than a brief explosion.”
We stared at each other as his words hung in the air between us. “With Brody …” I spoke into the silence. “It was crazy intense. I met him in college my freshman year. And right from the start, we had instant fireworks … the brief explosions you were just talking about. He pretty much swept me off my feet, and I kind of jumped off the diving board into the deep end.”
Liam had a deep and intent expression on his face as he listened to me.
His eyes were open and accepting. Nonjudgmental.
When I finished, he grew quiet for a moment. Then he said, “I think the idea that love must be crazy intense all the time is what keeps people from being satisfied with the normal, boring day-to-day love. The sort of quiet love that is tucked away in the corner instead of shouted from the rooftops. That kind of simple day-to-day love … that quiet love, it might seem dull to others. But for me—” He gave a short shrug— “that’s love.”

Forgotten in Darkness - Review

Hello, it's been long since my last review or updated. Finally classes are over and life is getting back to normal.
I read this book a few weeks ago and finally had the time to write my review.
My thanks to the author for sending me a copy of the book.

You can read the review for book one: HERE.

Forgotten in Darkness (Scimitar Magi #2)
by Zoe Forward

Forgotten in Darkness (Scimitar Magi, # 2)
After an unjustified two-century stint in purgatory, Scimitar Magus Dakar returns to the human realm, renewing his eons-old curse. Once again he must murder the woman he loves. To break the vicious cycle, he must kill her before she strikes her deathblow, something he's never done in the past.

Archaeology grad student, Shay McGinnis, suffers a near-death attack in pursuit of a piece of Scimitar Magi lore. But did the magnificent warrior who pinned her to the wall injure her or the daemon he fought? In her search for answers, she draws the attention of both an ancient evil sorcerer and the warrior Dakar. The attraction between her and Dakar is instant, and for Shay confusing. She wants to be with him, but intuition equates him with death. Not random death. Hers.

Will this be the lifetime they break the curse before they are murdered by an age old enemy or worse kill each other yet again?

*Warning: Contains explicit sex, graphic language, action-adventure, and an exceptionally hot tatted hero.*

MY REVIEW.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Book two in the Scimitar Magi is slightly different from the first. Another paranormal romance that deepens into the world created by Zoe and leaves you waiting for more.

This time we have Dakar, an ancient Magus released from purgatory after spending the last two centuries there. With all his memories and a curse at his back, he is back ready to face the demons and love. Shay, an archaeology grad student who is not afraid of getting her hands dirty, gets too close to the legends and ancient religions she study when a demon attacks her and she is saved by a mystery man.

After their first encounter we have to wait a lot of chapters for them to be reunited. This for me was a thing that put the book on a slow level. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of action, explosion, fights and adrenaline runs through those chapters but the sexual tension is almost non-existing. Luckily, the waiting is rewarded with lots of pages full with the kind of romance we like.

Dakar and Shay are amazing characters, with so many layers that is easy to picture them as real. They also have a past in common, which is incredible described and created. The author does an outstanding work writing about the ancient Egypt and the gods. The words flow naturally and the language is engaging and easy to read.

One of the best parts is the apparition of the different deities. They really like to have fun messing with everyone’s lives and they are not ashamed of it.

Another good thing is that we still get to read about the characters we felt in love the first time (Ashor and Kira). Mainly is the story of a new magus but he is part of a bigger world and I loved how the author joins their stories.

Overall, the sequel is everything you would expect. The magi continue being sexy, strong, brave and hot. I can’t wait for their next adventure.

MY REVIEW.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Skin Deep is a book about a relatable subject, a woman wishing to have a different body. A story about learning to accept who we are and about loving ourselves so others can do it too.

Kiera has gone to hell and back. After moving away from a violent and abusive boyfriend, she is now alone surrounded with few friends and a boring life. Always dreaming about having the perfect body she has come to hate herself. Many of us have had or have issues with our bodies or a part of it. When a gypsy offers you the chance of a lifetime, what would you do?

Things get complicated when she gets her wish but at a high price: no sex. So imagine what a mess her life becomes once she meets Cain. He is sexy, wild and a man whore.

I like how good both characters are and how well they are developed. Their pasts are well thought and are complete. Some of their past experiences are pretty cruel and difficult to imagine but they make the story even better.

This is a story about healing and how Kiera and Cain have to come to peace with their flaws and secrets before taking their relationship to another level. I love the book because of this because the sexual tension had a meaning.

A story full of tension, with the temperature always at its peak and emotions running wild. The book has a fast pace and a great language. The author creates a great world where paranormal creatures are real and have lots of fun.

Release Date: December 2nd 2013
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Firetrail Publishing

One lost love.
One lost best friend.
One hot soul reaper.
Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The love of her life, the guy she’s loved from a distance for years, has moved away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.
The chemistry between them is mind-blowing. The connection defies logic. It doesn’t help that Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. A general pain-in-the-butt. Being around him makes her feel more alive than she’s ever felt before. But more important, the souls leave her alone when he is around.
Echo is perfect for her. Echo might even be her soul-mate. There is only one problem. Echo is a freaking soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life. You see, once you fall for a Grimnir, your life will never be the same again.

******
EXCERPT.
I saw a few souls here and there on our way home. They all stopped and stared at our car. I slid lower in my seat and wondered whether the arrogant reaper would collect them, too. Maybe he was here to clean up our town. I hoped so. I was tired of being a target.

“You’ve been quiet since we left the store,” Mom said as we got closer to home. We were on Orchard Road, the street that split two of the largest vineyards in Kayville. “Are you okay?”
I shrugged. “Yeah.”

“You know, you can talk to me if anything is bothering you.”

Talking to her was out of the question. Dr. Wendell might prescribe more psych meds or insist on having me admitted again. “I heard you and Dad talk about me this morning. I don’t want to be homeschooled, Mom. I’m going back to school on Monday.”

“Sweetie—”

“No, Mom. I’m better, and I want to do this.”

Her lips pinched in annoyance as she turned onto the road leading to our farm. “Let’s discuss it after dinner.”

Her firm voice said the discussion was closed. I leaned back against my seat and stared out the window. My parents had had me later in life and tended to be overly protective. Most of the time, I listened to them. Not this time. This might be the beginning of a trend. First, homeschooling. Next, not going away to college. The only college in town was a private one, and I planned to go as far away from Kayville as I could. There were way too many bad memories here.

MY REVIEW.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sam and Austin are back together but things are far from easy. Death still hunts them, secrets keep coming to light and we discovered that their lives have been manipulated for a long time. Embracing Death is the second book in The Death Trilogy and as its predecessor is fast, sexy and enjoyable.

The exciting, never-ending and turbulent trio of Sam, Austin and Nixon continues. Both men love her and would do anything to make her happy but she has other plans.

Sam is our stubborn leading lady, with a chaotic mind, strong feelings and a personality that keeps surprising me. Austin is now in a vulnerable place and Nixon reveals sides of him that I didn’t like.

The characters keep evolving and this time we have the chance to see a glimpse of Nixon’s point of view. The writer does a great job developing them and I can’t wait to read how their stories end.

This book is focused in emotions which for me is amazing. Dara makes an incredible work creating a believable, solid and powerful world. It is dark, wild, and dangerous but somehow it makes you want more. I never thought that reading about how death feels could be so entertaining.

Embracing Death has less sex scenes than the first book but I think the temperature this book has is appropriate for the story because we are dealing with darker subjects. Don’t get me wrong, there is sex and when it appears is intense, well written and entertaining.

Overall, Embracing Death is the perfect sequel because it is full of surprises. Every page brings new information and you never know where the story is going.

Fast, engaging, well written and sexy this book is everything I expected it to be.

Before the day… before M-day… people used to read books and watch movies about

Maxine was one of the lucky ones--she got out alive. She and her friends banded together to survive the new desolate conditions left behind by the virus. When a supply gathering mission goes awry, Max and company are left with no better choice than to trust a group of uninfected military men. No longer on the run from her infected husband, Max discovers there could be worse dangers for her on the horizon… Like losing her heart to her mysterious savior everyone calls Zee.
